A Smoke-Free Home

SMOKE-FREE HOMES

One way to reduce exposure to secondhand smoke in the home is by creating a smoke-free home rule.

A smoke-free home is one in which smoking is not allowed anywhere or at anytime within the home.  Ideally, in a smoke-free home, smoking is not allowed in the home, near doors or windows or any area where smoke can get back into the home.

In 2010, 4 out of 5 households in the United States reported having a total household smoking ban.

BENEFITS OF A SMOKE-FREE HOME

Creating a smoke-free home can be beneficial to both the smoker and non-smoker in the home. Having a smoke-free home rule in place can:

  • Reduce exposure to secondhand smoke in children and adult non-smokers
  • Disrupt the smoking initiation process among teens and adolescents
