Thirdhand Smoke
ANOTHER REASON TO GO SMOKE-FREE
Thirdhand smoke is the harmful elements of cigarette smoke that stay on the surfaces of objects after visible smoke is gone. Thirdhand smoke can remain on surfaces for days, weeks or even months.
Thirdhand smoke remains in clothing, furniture, walls, floors, carpet, curtains and on other surfaces like tables and bed frames.
A person is exposed to thirdhand smoke by touching, breathing or swallowing tobacco residue in dust and on surfaces.
Children and infants are more at risk for being exposed to thirdhand smoke and are more likely to breathe, touch and swallow the residue which might lead to long term health effects.
